Grey squirrels

The grey squirrel was introduced to Britain from North American from the late 1800s. It's mainly a resident of the conifer woodland areas. It can also be found in urban areas located in parks and gardens wherever trees may be. Grey squirrels are rodents, and they have incisor teeth that continuously grow throughout their life so they have to gnaw to keep them short in order for them to survive. Head to body is around 25cm in length and the tail a further 22cm long. Weight about 500g. Agile climbers with sharp claws and a bushy tale to help with balance.

Biology

Grey squirrels build a nest drey out of twigs and leaves or if your unlucky enough to have them in your loft they may build a nest out of the loft insulation. Dreys are used for breeding and shelter.

Grey squirrels have two breeding seasons a year. First litters are born between February and March and the second littles are born in June and July. Litters will average about three but can be as high as seven. Gestation periods of 45 days and the young are weaned at 10 weeks old.

Signs of Grey squirrels would be dreys for nesting and shelter. Droppings which vary in shape and colour possibly similar to rat droppings but may be more spherical. Squirrel tracks can be found mud from their feet and tail, runs can also be found on top of the loft insulation.

Importance - Activity inside a domestic house roof space grey squirrels can cause significant damage such as - gnawing through electrical cables, woodwork of the ceilings and water pipes, and also tear up and contaminate loft fibre glass to form dreys. Greys squirrels have also be known to attack people although this rare it has happened. Food sources such as bird feeders and nuts and fruit trees may be raided in domestic gardens any surplus food will buried in the garden and holes may be visible. These food sources do provide a big attraction for squirrels and other Rodents.

All of the above information is the reason why sometimes grey squirrels have to be controlled especially if they have access inside your property.

Important Squirrel facts before controlling

Red squirrels which are native to Britain the numbers of them have been highly reduced this is down to grey squirrels being introduced. The reasons are the grey squirrels can carry a disease called the parapoxvirus which can be transmitted from grey to red which can kill them but the grey squirrel won't contracted it. This virus is deadly. Also when the grey squirrel enters the habitat of the red squirrel it out competes it for food. Areas of woodland being destroyed for re development has reduced numbers. All of the information above is the reason why red squirrels are now protected under the wildlife and countryside act.
