Signs of Wood Worm Infestation
Wood worm infestations can often go unnoticed until significant damage has occurred. Look out for small round exit holes in wood, fine powdery dust around the holes, and weakened or damaged wood. If you suspect a wood worm infestation, it's crucial to take immediate action to prevent further harm.
Furniture Beetle, woodworm
Habitat - Found in Europe and Britain. The furniture Beetle occurs outdoors infesting dead tree trunks, branches and fence posts. Can also be found indoors infesting roof and loft joists, old wooden windows/doors and even furniture.
Biology - The adults will emerge from the timber in the spring or early summer. eggs of up to 30 per female are laid in an open grain of wood such as manufacturer open sawn timber. The eggs will hatch in about four weeks. The larval stage will cause all the damage here as it bores through the timber between two and four years. As the final larval stage approaches the surface of the timber it will make a chamber as it pupates for final the final stage of the life cycle the adult will emerge leaving a gritty powder as evidence.
Importance - A serious pest of structural timber and furniture. Long infestations can compromise the structural integrity. Polished wood is not attacked. The furniture beetle can also be confused with the biscuit beetle.
Control - Residual insecticides can be used for small scale treatments. Large scale treatments and if damage is bad then I would recommend getting in contact with a timber specialist.

Other wood-boring beetles
Death-watch beetle: The adults will emerge from spring. Hardwood trees such as oak or willow is most commonly infested and can be found indoors. The whole life cycle is about four years and can cause significant structural weakness to your property. Both sexes of the death watch beetle make a distinctive tapping sound on the roof rafters that may be heard during breeding season to attract one another.
Powder post beetle: The larvae of these beetles feed on sugar and starches of the sapwood of trees such as oak and chestnut. No softwood trees are attacked. Kiln drying the wood at temperatures will preserve the starch and make it suitable for larvae. Carefully control with the temperature to make them less to attack.
Wharf borer: The larvae feed on wet timber only. Places such as cellars or sub ground floors. Also long term leakage from water pipes or blocked air vent can cause the wood to damp making it suitable for the larvae. Appearance - 12mm long and reddish brown in colour.
