Common Clothes - carpet moth

Moth - eggs, larvae, adults

Habitat - This is an indoor insect and throughout Britain. As the name suggests the larval stage of clothes moth will feed on natural fur materials such wool, cashmere, animal fibres, fur, silk, feathers, felt, and leather etc that clothes and carpet are made from.

Biology - The adult female will lay eggs in the fur fibres or close to a food source. The ideal breeding temperature is between 10 degrees to 33 degrees with a high humidity. The larvae are whitish caterpillars that form silk tunnels within the fibres to camouflage. They leave the tunnels at night to feed and hide in the day. Fully develop between 2-7 months depending on the temperature. Pupae stage takes between 2 weeks or 2 months to develop then the adult moth will emerge.

Importance - A great deal of damage can be caused by the carpet moth. Damaged to expensive garments and carpets can cost a lot to replace.

The type of control you can try first if the infestation is small is use a vacuum to removal all larval stages of the carpet to prevent further damage. Wash garments at a hot temperature. Purchased pheromone traps this will attract the male moths and break the life cycle. I would recommend all of this and residual chemical spray to all carpet areas.

The other species that is similar to the clothes moth is the case bearing clothes moth. The larvae feed on carpets, clothes and any other natural materials of animal origin.

Variegated Carpet beetle

Common in domestic premises and larvae feed on natural fur, fabrics and carpets and causing significant damage.

Biology - eggs are laid at 100 per female. Hatch in 10 days to one month. The larvae are known as woolly bear and are hairy causing skin irritation to humans, have 5 moults. Pupae take 10 days to develop.

Importance - the larvae causing skin irritation can be very uncomfortable and possibly causing secondary skin infections.

Control measures would include vacuuming all carpet areas, removing any old bird nests under the roof eaves. A professional insecticide spray to all carpet areas.
