Having an Ant infestation inside your property can be alarming for any domestic or commercial property. The reason being Ants don't carry diseases as such but they can transmit food borne illnesses by cross contamination. food borne diseases such as salmonella and E. Coli can easily be transferred from one food to another. Ants in general can also be a nuisance especially in large numbers lets not forget some ant species can actually cause structural damage to buildings.

Ants in general can enter a property in many ways due to their small size. They might enter air bricks, gaps around door and window frames, under foundations or paving slabs, under roof eaves. Completely sealing ingress points can be very difficult but definitely worth a go. Installing insect mesh to air bricks, using a external sealant to fill gaps around window and door frames, keep vegetation clear away from your property might just deal with the issue.

Garden ant control

Habitat - very common ant species in the UK and commonly found close to human activities. The garden ant forms nest in the soil, under paving slabs and sometimes under foundations of buildings sandy/soil substrate is the perfect location for a nest. One queen per nest. The worker ants will forage for food such as sweet substances to support the nest and the queen.

BiologyThe garden Ant will start a nest with a mated winged female digging into a suitable location to start the nest. She will lay a large number of white eggs that will hatch in four weeks. After another three weeks the mature larvae will pupate. After about two weeks the first generation of ants will emerge.

Importance - Black Ants will feed on a variety of food but especially sweet substances this will need to be removed to help achieve control. Worker ants will communicate with one another to invade close by food sources which will lead to a high a number of ants in that area. This may possible lead to ants walking across surfaces that may not be clean then contaminating the food.

Control measures such as buying over the counter ant bait stations, dust or sprays may help. If the problem becomes to out of control then a more professional approach will be need to be carried out along with hygiene and proofing recommendations.

Pharaoh's ant control

Habitat - This Ants species is a Tropical species but can be found in UK in heated buildings. The pharaohs ant will form nests in wall cavities and heating ducts. There are several queens in a nest and the workers and queens have the ability to to leave the nest and this will cause the infestation spread by term called budding to form satellite colonies. The Pharaohs ant will mainly be found inside buildings such as large housing blocks, hospitals and prisons.

Biology - A Pharaoh Ants nest will contain several queens that can lay eggs. Nests of up to 50,000 workers has been recorded. Eggs that are laid by the queens will hatch in about two weeks. Larvae will fed by the workers and fully grown four weeks. Pupae develop in two weeks. A good temperature for breeding is around 30 degrees which is why heated buildings are favourable for them.

Importance - The pharaohs ant needs access to a water source which can bring them into contact with drain and waste bins, this can transmit food borne diseases with cross contamination with other food products or food prep areas. The worker ants communicate to other worker ants using a pheromone to communicate potential food sources. Infestations can be widespread due to budding, any stress that is caused to the nest will cause them spilt.

Controlling the pharaoh ant can be very difficult even for a professional. If you misidentify and do the wrong treatment it can make the infestation spread. The best control measure is a bait formulation to feed the ants.

A similar insect to the pharaohs ant is the Ghost Ant but this is less common in the UK.

Carpenter ant control

This species of Ant is common in Britain and can cause structural damages to your property and furniture.

Carpenter ants make their nests in old, damp wood. Because they like damp wood, they are normally found living outdoors. However, they sometimes come to nest inside people’s homes. Common signs of carpenter ants include small piles of sawdust and small bore holes and wood damage. Carpenter ants don’t actually eat wood. Instead they carve out holes in the wood to nest in. This leaves the wood damaged and weak.

To prevent carpenters ant please try the following.

  • Keep an eye on the wood on or near your home and ensure it stays in good shape; replacing and repairing it is necessary.

  • Keep wood piles five inches off the ground and at least 20 feet from your home.

  • Use caulk to seal any cracks or holes on the exterior of your property.
