Rats are mainly nocturnal and if they are in a part of your house such as the loft, cavity wall/ceilings or underneath floors you may hear them.
Rat droppings are 12mm long and spindle shaped and produce around 40 droppings a day. They are usually found in one concentrated area.
Rats also need gnaw to ensure wear is replaced on the incisors teeth. Gnawing damage to wood, concrete or electrical cables may also be a sign.
What attracts rats close to or inside a domestic property?
Rodents need three main things to survive - food water and shelter. Eliminating one of the three will help with all around control.
-
Shelter - Rats in the winter need somewhere warm to harbour and potentially breed.
-
Water sources - bird baths and fish ponds, any water standing in dishes outside
-
Food sources - bird feeders, overflowing bins, compost bins, fruit trees, Vegetable patches, chicken coops this will definitely attract rodents near to your property.
