Did you know that bees are responsible for pollinating one-third of the food we consume? Bees play a crucial role in the production of fruits, vegetables, and nuts, making them essential for food production and biodiversity.
Honey Bees
Honey Bee is a cosmopolitan insect, it been spread worldwide due to the its value and source in honey and beeswax.
Habitat - These social insects will form colonies, in hollow trees etc. but many colonies are owned by beekeepers in hives. Bee colonies can survive over several years as the overwinter bees use the honey as food.
Biology - 1000s of eggs are laid by the queen throughout the spring and summer. Legless grubs are fed by the worker bees. Adults - are dark brown, hairy and winged and 15mm long. Queen bee is larger about 20mm long.
Importance - The honey Bee is a very beneficial insects for producing honey and beeswax and are essential role for pollinating flowers. This is essential for plant production. The honey bee will only sting if highly provoked.
Control - Sometimes a honey Bees nest can be found in chimney voids or wall cavities in a domestic property. I would always advise to find a beekeeper to extract the nest. Treating any bees nest with insecticides can cause other bee hives to get infected as bees may be robbing honey from the treated nest. only as a last resort bees may be treated if they are a high risk to public health.
Also many people will be alarmed by swarming bees this is when a nest close by has produced another queen and it splits away with some worker bees causing a swarm. The population of the nest becomes to big.
The Bumblebee is a social insect that forms a colony. They are large furry bees, yellow or tawny in colour. Nests are usually located in holes in trees or in the ground. On Very rare occasions I have came across bees nest in a shed or loft. The males and females are produced at the end of summer, and only mated females survive winter by hibernation. A Very beneficial insect for pollination. If you suspect you have a Bees nest then contact a Beekeeper.
Other Bee species
Solitary bees that may cause problems in a domestic house.
The mining Bee can cause extreme problems on a domestic lawn when the substrate is sand and loose soil. Each individual female will excavate the dirt and lay an egg. There may be many individual nests group close together. They will usually disappear mid summertime. They cannot sting.
The Mason Bees can look similar to the Honey Bee with their colouration and frequently associated with buildings. They will nest in cavities or excavate soft mortar from the brickwork which can cause structural damages if left over a long period time. This Bee species usually returns each year to the same location to nest. The best way to control this bee is to re point the brickwork to prevent the bees from excavating. The mason bees is a highly beneficial in pollinating plants and trees.
